KEITH WAS RIGHT about one thing. With age definitely came experience.

Monica wrapped her arms around his neck and drew his face closer as she deepened the kiss. One that was so fantastic, it caught her completely off guard.

Not that Keith seemed like a man who didn’t know how to leave a woman breathless, but this was more than just a physical connection. Her stomach fluttered, and a warmness was flowing through her. There was a passionate longing, yet sexy reservedness, about the way he held her that made her legs go weak.

And the kiss itself had caught her by surprise. She’d felt Keith’s attraction to her, but she hadn’t expected him to act on it.

She moved closer to him and savored the taste of his lips, breathed in the manly aftershave and the scent of the outdoors lingering on his skin, enjoyed the feel of big, strong arms holding her tight as the boat continued to sway beneath their feet. She hadn’t kissed anyone since her divorce. She hadn’t even entertained the idea of a new relationship. It seemed still too fresh, too new... Her feelings about the whole situation were still a little undecipherable.

But kissing Keith brought a new clarity. It erased any doubt about whether she was ready to move on...to give her heart to someone else. She’d missed this physical closeness—this connection—with a man. She knew she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life alone.

He broke away, slightly breathless, and she wanted to reach for him and bring his mouth back to hers, but she sensed the kiss had shaken him a little. His expression held a hint of cautious hesitation when his eyes met hers. He cleared his throat as he gently released her and took a step back. “Sorry if that—”

She shook her head quickly. “No. That was...” Wonderful. Spontaneous. She’d hazard to say the best kiss of her life.

He shoved his hands in his pockets and nodded. “Why don’t you take the opportunity for some sleep,” he said. “It might be another late night, trying to get back on course.”

He was trying to distance himself. The kiss had completely freaked him out.

“Okay. Sounds great.” She took a deep breath as she headed toward the bedroom, though she knew she probably wouldn’t be able to sleep. “Wake me up when you want to switch off,” she said.

Inside the bedroom, she lay on the bed and pulled a blanket up over her. The sound of footsteps pacing above her head confirmed it. Keith was panicking.

Should she go back out there and assure him that the kiss was okay? Or was he regretting it? In which case she should probably go out there and tell him that it hadn’t meant anything and reassure him that she wasn’t reading anything into it...

She groaned as uncertainty wrapped around her.

She didn’t regret the kiss. Or opening up to Keith about her potential firing. His reaction had made her feel better. Being around him made her feel good.
